  • John Wick: Chapter 2: I am quite astonished. These movies are supposed to be good action movies. They are, in a sense, but only as a stunt man's fever dream, and I say this in the most loving way possible. They are long, power-fantasy action scenes held together by the smallest amount possible of, again, stunt-man fantasy mystique.Let me add that I adore stuntpeople. This is not an attack on stuntpeople, or on any specific persons. Stuntwomen and men are fantastic and do things that are unimaginably hard and dangerous. They make modern action movies, nay, modern movies at all possible. But they might just not be the best people to write movies, you know, like, for a general audience? For boys, absolutely. But for the rest of us, meh. The basic ideas and premises are great, a mysterious cabal of criminals but with rules, a mysterious almost-invincible killer with a past, several high-profile personalities of the criminal underworld with agendas -- but then all they do with that is use them as the least amount of glue between action sequences.Let's also talk about the names. The first one is just “John Wick”, ok. Then it's “John Wick: Chapter 2”, then “John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum”, which adds the completely superfluous and vacuous name of a munition. And finally back to “John Wick: Chapter 4”. I... I guess these names are made up by boys playing with toys, aren't they? The car, which is the star of the first 15 minutes -- never comes up again. The dog, closure from the first part -- handed off, never comes up again. The wife, which was used quite extensively as a prop in the first movie -- never really comes up again. What does John Wick even live for? He says he's afraid of death, but is that all? Is there really no other way out? Could he not have told Cassian that they should team up against the real enemy instead of having another fight-off (that would've been awesome)? There is no growth, no catharsis, no change, not outcome at all. But ah, I guess I misunderstood the movie: it's not really an action movie, it's an action sequence. As that, it's ok.
